Many people have heard of the classes that require students to handle an egg or a sack of flour to practice good parenting skills. But a year-long mandatory Marriage Ed course? Not so much.
Fiona is having the worst start to her senior year possible. And when the seniors are informed that the principal is initiating a mandatory Marriage Ed course to graduate, Fiona is shell-shocked. Well, if she can land her long-time crush, Gabe, as her “husband,” it might not be so bad. But to top off the horrible start, she lands none other than Todd Harding, “the” biggest jerk of the school, at least as far as Fiona is concerned. And Gabe winds up with none other than Todd’s cheerleader co-captain girlfriend, Amanda.
Fiona and Todd are at odds throughout the course. Fiona picks babysitting as their “real life” job and in retaliation, Todd requires Fiona to participate in cheerleading. At least Fiona’s best friend, Marcie, lands a nice guy for her partner, Johnny Mercer. And Johnny goes so far as to help Fiona in her pranks against Todd. But when Fiona goes too far, Marcie yells at her for being selfish, then gives her the cold shoulder.
When Fiona’s mom gets into crusade mode against the school and the Marriage Ed course, Fiona figures things can’t get any worse. But life can take a surprising twist and Fiona is startled by various revelations.
For a book that was originally due for release in May of 2009, I was a bit worried that there was a reason for the delay in publication. Thankfully, the worry in delay was unfounded. Though I don’t know the reason for the postponement, it was well worth the wait. Ms. Walker has written an entertaining and creative look at high school. She brilliantly wove a story that made the reader cheer for the wrong people at the beginning and watch as the characters evolved throughout the course of the fall semester. Ms. Walker makes the reader want to hate Todd from the beginning, but the sparring between Todd and Fiona is feisty and amusing.
I found myself chuckling throughout the story and rooting for the underdogs the whole way through. I’m just thankful that my high school didn’t have a mandatory Marriage Ed class! I know I wouldn’t have had quite the fun that Fiona and gang had!

This book was so different compared to other novels and i liked how the character, Fiona, was paired with this jock she had complete hatred for. I never got bored during reading it, yet the ending was disappointing.. i love the character Todd and i wish she would’ve ended up dating him, but instead she ended up with Johnny, the loner… i wish we couldve found out more about him, i just found him annoying. Thats the only thing that ruined it for me, other than that it was greaaaaat!

Kristin Walker’s A MATCH MADE IN HIGH SCHOOL is a funny, erudite look at high school and the drama and angst that accompanies teen relationships when one school adopts a “marriage education” course for their seniors to complete. When the story could have derailed and become another campy young adult novel, Walker’s sharp writing kept it on track. Narrator Fiona is smart-mouthed, quick-witted and, from start to finish, distinctly her own character.
The novel’s overall premise felt both unique and familiar at the same time — the classic trope of students paired up against their will, forced to work together on a project in which neither of them have much interest. I’ll cite Bella Swan matched as Edward Cullen’s lab partner, say. But it really didn’t bother me — mostly because the marriage education program? Pretty creative. The story had some laugh-out-loud moments and memorable characters.
A MATCH MADE IN HIGH SCHOOL didn’t take me in the classic, predictable route I expected, and I was very surprised and pleased with the ending. An entertaining, smart debut novel I’m happy to pass on to a friend.

At the first day of school, the principal announces that every senior must complete a year long Marriage Education program, Fiona Sheehan believes that her life can’t get any worse. That is until she finds out that her husband is jerky jock Todd and whose real life girlfriend, Amanda had has it in for Fiona since second grade. Also, Amanda is paired with Fiona’s long term crush, Gabe. At least Fiona isn’t paired with very quiet, very dorky, and very big Johnny Mercer like her best friend Marcie. Pranks, Fights, Misunderstandings, and Reconciliations fly wild in this amazingly original comedy.
This book had such amazing characters. Fiona was strong and sweet. I liked how she didn’t care so much about what people, but she also had layers that made her three dimensional. I loved Johnny Mercer, he was so sweet and awesome. Todd also was funny and a great character. I was so glad that he didn’t fall for Fiona, but they became friends. Marcie was also a great character. The plot wasn’t predictable. There was one part that I guessed, but other then that it was as predictable as the weather. This book was also so funny, I was laughing the whole time that I was reading it. The insults and pranks is what made this book so great. This book was also highly original. Their were some stereotypical characters that I still enjoyed, because they were complex and interesting. Walker created a fantastic book that I loved. I can’t really compare this book to anything, but you should read it.
